Las Calaveras y Culturas Hoodie.

Mateo first showed me this hoodie when it was a work in progress. Once it was done he showed it to me again and I fell in love with it. I asked if it was a custom made piece and he said no and it did not have a home yet. To that I said "it does now!"  I received it in the winter of 2009 and was completely blown away. Seeing close up the symbolism he chose to represent the culture he and I both hold so close to our hearts and spirits, it was so breath taking. Although this was not a custom piece, I knew it was made just for me.

Thank you for submission,Sylvia!!!!
Inspirations for this batik were drawn from the Mexican Dia de los Muertos customs(a blend of Indigenous and Spanish Catholic beliefs) as well as the art of the
 Mexica (Azteca) codices.
This is not a batik of sadness or fear but, one of  celebration and remembrance for our loved ones that have moved on.
I am glad that I know where this batik resides unlike, so many of the more elaborate works that have been done by Mountain Air Batik.
Matiox, Gracias,Thank You.

Good things come to those that ask....

Good things come to those who wait! I had my heart set on having a Mountain Air Batik hoodie, so I found a comfy white hoodie and mailed it out to Mateo.  I asked him to run with whatever inspiration he felt with it and also said I didn't care if it took years to get back to me.. I wanted it to be an easy breezy project, no stress, and something from the heart.  Not too long after, I got a package in the mail and was so thrilled to see the vibrant purple color bursting out of the box as I opened it.  I'm so grateful to be on the receiving end of this beautiful artwork that perfectly resonates with my heart, despite the fact that I never asked for any specific design.  Namaste!

Los Mitos y Elementos

Gilly (and Rodolfo)of Inti/ Lil Sum' Sum' and Kan'Nal with the insane "Mitos..." hoodie.

The front of this hoodie was covered with one of the most famous Mexica (or Azteca) symbols known to the world, the Tonatiuh.

Maya glyph for the sun.

Maya glyph for a solar eclipse.

Maya glyph for the moon.

Detail of Kukulkan (or the feathered serpent) spilling water from his open mouth. Take note of the Maya  T shaped glyph "Ik" which stands for wind...
This is a view of the entire back of the hood. I tried to incorporate the elements of nature as well as Maya mythology.
Notice the sky is complete with the sun, moon and eclipse glyphs.
The center art pays homage to the feathered serpent "Kukulkan as well as 'Chac" the God of rain.
The bottom of quarter of the  garment displays two temples in the distance with plumes of fire encasing the entire design. The Center glyph is one that many know as the Mountain Air Batik Logo, or 6 Akbal.
The sleeves were covered in flames and each given a symbol  that represented darkness and the need for light.
The second sleeve was once again covered in flames but instead of having a glyph for darkness I chose the glyph for the moon.
This Hoodie resides in Denver Colorado and from what I am told is worn often. I made the hoodie in September of 2008.

My Hoodie.

Like many of the other hooded batiks, this one had no name. At the time it was the largest batik that I had ever attempted on an article of clothing. I lived in this hoodie for a long time. After 4 years of being offered money for it I finally parted ways with it. Now someone else owns it and I hope they are loving it as much as I did.
We will be posting more hoodie pictures over the next couple of weeks, maybe yours will be one of them!

HOODIES!

Hello all!  We here at Mountain Air Batik have made  quite a few batik  super heavy weight hoodies in the
past 10 years.  Almost all of them have been custom batik creations made specifically for a person that was in search of a unique piece of wearable art. In the past we would talk about an idea  do a few sketches and then talk some more about the batik work before the concept of the requested art began. Although we have tried to photograph each and every one of a kind batik, some have slipped through our hands never being documented. We have recently talked about the amount of custom and original batik hoodies we have made in the past 10 years and began to wonder where and with whom these very special batik works of art have rooted themselves. So, if you are the  owner of a custom made or one of a kind  Mountain Air Batik hoodie we would love to from you. Please send us a photo of you in your hoodie along with a little story(that we can reproduce for a future blog post) about where and when you acquired your special batik'ed woobie!(
Please send your story and photo to mountainairbatik@comcast.net
Much Thanks,
